Four functions have been identified as central in pastoral care and counselling: reconciliation, healing, sustenance, and guidance. The cross of Christ shapes each of these functions, especially in the context of missions. We shall see how the cross can be seen in three ways – as divine intervention, pastoral prescription, and as the key relational principle. We will thus appreciate why Paul, the great missionary, wrote: “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2).
